Additional Funding for Operating Clients

BC Arts Council operating clients who received funding through the recent adjudication round may be eligible for additional funding thanks to resources made available by the Province through the 2010 Sports and Arts Legacy Fund. The additional funding is available to eligible Council clients that demonstrate that they are supporting activities in the coming year which reflect the vision of the Legacy.

The vision for the arts portion of the Legacy is to bring B.C. artists, cultural organizations, creative industries, and communities together with the public in celebration of the unique and vibrant culture that reflects the spirit of British Columbia.

Interested clients must submit a letter of intent addressed to:

Gillian Wood
Acting Executive Director
BC Arts Council
P.O. Box 9819, Stn Prov Govt
Victoria BC V8W 9W3

or to bcartscouncil@gov.bc.ca

on or before September 30, 2010 to participate in the program.

Letter of Intent
The letter of intent will be a maximum of three pages in length, may be submitted by mail or email and should include two sections:

  1. An introduction that outlines how an organization’s mandate and/or mission aligns with the vision of the Legacy.
  2. An outline of programming during 2010/11, which describes at least one specific activity the organization intends to undertake in support of the Legacy. Specific activities include participation in BC Spirit Festival or Signature Celebration events, plans to engage an Artist in Residency, and programs that feature emerging B.C. artists.

Programming proposals may include new activities or existing programs adapted to reflect the Legacy vision. Funding levels will be allocated based on the rankings determined by the Advisory Committee meetings held during the spring of 2010. Funds will be released by October 31, 2010.

Legacy Programs

The Letter of Intent must describe one or more activity the organization intends to undertake in support of the Legacy. Specific Legacy components include:

  • BC Spirit Festivals. Operating clients seeking additional Legacy support should outline their intention to participate in the forthcoming BC Spirit Festivals and Signature Celebrations. Throughout February 2011, to build on the legacy of the 2010 Cultural Olympiad, communities across the province will mount BC Spirit Festivals. The festivals will be produced through community-based partnerships and will feature professional artists and groups. It is acknowledged that programming plans for these events are currently unconfirmed. As a result, operating clients should consider how their programming could contribute to the festivals and are advised to indicate their willingness to participate.

  • Signature Celebrations. These are similar to the BC Spirit Festivals, but are coordinated celebrations for Vancouver and Victoria. Signature Celebrations will be organized through central agencies, to be announced soon, produced with community-based partnerships and feature professional artists and groups. It is acknowledged that programming plans for these events are currently unconfirmed. As a result, operating clients should consider how their programming could contribute to the festivals and are advised to indicate their willingness to participate.

  • Artists in Residency. This component will involve organizations that engage professional artists as term-limited artists-in-residence. The artists will undertake various developmental or creative projects that reflect the vision of the Legacy. As part of their projects, artists-in-residence may work with young and emerging practitioners to help develop the next generation of artists.

  • Support for Emerging Artists. This component is intended to provide artists, technicians and administrators at the beginning of their professional careers with access to the expertise and experience within established arts organizations. Activities may include productions, training programs, professional development, internships and mentorships.
