ORDER OF B.C., CANADA COUNCIL PRIZES FOR B.C. ARTISTS

VICTORIA – B.C. artists Leon Bibb, Roy Akira Miki and Dolores Kirkwood have received the Order of British Columbia, while Vancouver’s Judith Marcuse has won the prestigious Jacqueline Lemieux Prize.

The Order of British Columbia, announced by Lieutenant-Governor Steven Point on August 24, recognizes British Columbians who have contributed to the province in extraordinary ways.

Bibb, of Vancouver, earned the award for his long and distinguished career as an international performer, and for his role in the development of B.C.’s arts community.

Burnaby’s Miki was honoured for his career as a distinguished scholar and teacher, one of Canada’s finest poets and authors, and a passionate advocate for social justice.

Kirkwood, of New Westminster, was recognized for her work as a teacher, choreographer and adjudicator and for her cultural contributions as one of Canada’s foremost experts on ballet and musical theatre.

The Canada Council’s Jacqueline Lemieux Prize is awarded to the most deserving applicant in the Canada Council Grants to Dance Professionals program. The Council selection of Marcuse acknowledges her history as a dancer, choreographer, artistic director and arts advocate in Vancouver.

The Order of British Columbia was established in 1989 to recognize British Columbians who have served with the greatest distinction and excelled in any field of endeavour. The Order represents the highest form of recognition the Province can extend to its citizens.

The Jacqueline Lemieux Prize, valued at $6,000, is awarded in memory of Jacqueline Lemieux and her contribution to Canadian dance.
