B.C. ARTS COMMUNITY MEMBERS APPOINTED TO ORDER OF CANADA
OTTAWA --An influential writer and an art champion are two of B.C.’s recent Order of Canada appointments.
The citation notes Victoria writer and educator Jack Hodgins is recognized as a Companion of the Order, “for his contributions to Canadian literature as a writer whose work celebrates the people and landscape of Vancouver Island, and for his leadership as a teacher and mentor to many.”
Vancouver Art Gallery curator Ian M. Thom is also recognized as a Companion of the Order, “for his contributions as a curator of Canadian art and as an advocate for British Columbia artists.”
Established in 1967, the Order of Canada acknowledges outstanding achievement and service in various fields of human enterprise and is Canada’s highest civilian honour. Sixty appointments were announced by Governor General Michaëlle Jean in this latest round.
The Order of Canada has three levels of membership — Companion, Officer and Member. The levels honour people whose accomplishments vary in degree and scope.
