COUNCIL MAKES PRE-BUDGET SUBMISSION

VICTORIA -- The BC Arts Council has made a formal written submission to the Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services, Council Chair Jane Danzo said today.

“Council is addressing the need to develop stable, multi-year funding for arts organizations,” Danzo said. “Without this stability – as recent events have borne out – this key social and economic sector remains highly vulnerable.”

The Select Standing Committee is gathering public comments to establish priorities for the next provincial budget.

The Council’s submission included a review of provincial arts funding developments over the last eight months and a number of recommendations for the next Provincial budget, including a call for Government to reinstate Council’s legislated appropriation and assure access to earnings of the BC150 Cultural Fund.

“Provincial funding to the arts is an investment in the vitality of our communities and in the social and economic health of the province. We believe Council is an important advocate for the arts in B.C. and we wanted to make sure our voice was heard as government begins to prepare the next budget.”
