CHAIR'S COMMUNIQUE AUGUST 2010
Dear BCAC Grants Recipient:While the BC Arts Council Board is grateful that Government has seen the value of continuing to support the arts in its recent appropriation, especially in these challenging economic times, we recognize the hardship both individuals and organizations face due to the reduction to our budget.
There is no question this has been one of the most difficult years in the history of the Council with respect to the determination of grant awards. The decision-making process for the Board – and, as we understand it, the advisory committees and juries -- has been exceptionally trying. Under direction provided by the Board, the peer review committees had the difficult task of ranking applicants within the context of budget constraints. In every case, we feel these impartial committees succeeded in being fair and judicious.
Council remains committed to artistic excellence and providing meaningful support to as many disciplines as possible. To this end we will continue to advocate for provincial funding that is commensurate with, and a reflection of, what our diverse, dynamic and excellent arts and culture sector deserves. We look forward to the day when we will be in a position to provide increased support to all of our clients through legislated appropriation.
We are hoping that through increased dialogue between all the partners in the arts and government we can find innovative ways to continue to build ongoing support for arts and culture in our province.
We are also pleased with the positive news regarding the 2010 Sports and Arts Legacy Fund. As you heard in an email from the Honourable Kevin Krueger, Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts, the Province is providing additional funds for Council operating clients. As well, the Minister announced the new Spirit Festival program, which not only celebrates arts and culture in the province, but will provide professional artists with direct opportunities. I am pleased to report that the BC Arts Council will be working with the Assembly of BC Arts Councils to deliver this program.

Sincerely,
Jane Danzo
