$2 MILLION FOR ARTS ORGANIZATIONS ACROSS B.C.
October 27, 2010
VICTORIA –Arts organizations in communities across British Columbia are receiving grants totalling $2 million from the BC Arts Council this week.
The BC Arts Council is awarding funding to more than 80 organizations, which deliver arts programming in music, dance, theatre and arts periodicals.
“I would like to congratulate all the recipients and commend the artists who participated in the Council’s independent review process,” said Stephanie Cadieux, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development. “I look forward to working with the Council and the province’s vital, dynamic arts and cultural community. The arts are critical to healthy, sustainable communities throughout British Columbia.”
The funding decisions were approved by the Council Board based on recommendations made by the independent peer-review panel in mid-October.
“We are pleased to be releasing support to so many of our key arts organizations,” said Council chairman Dr. Stanley Hamilton. “This funding was made possible by $7 million in support provided by the provincial government through the arts portion of the new 2010 Sport and Arts Legacy Fund.”
The 2010 Sport and Arts Legacy Fund, announced in March as part of the Provincial budget, provides $60 million over three years to enhance sports, arts and cultural opportunities for all British Columbians. A total of $7 million has been provided to the Council to help it advance goals set out in its strategic plan, with the additional $3 million allocated for the BC Spirit Festivals and Signature Celebrations.
A full list of grant recipients will be posted on the council’s website once recipients have been notified.
