KRUEGER PROCLAIMS ARTS WEEK
VICTORIA – British Columbians are celebrating B.C.’s vibrant arts and cultural community during this, the eleventh annual Arts and Culture Week, Tourism, Culture and the Arts Minister Kevin Krueger announced today.
“British Columbians have met the challenges of the past year with strength and enthusiasm and the arts sector significantly so.” Krueger said. “Arts and Culture Week activity is an opportunity to recognize the important and growing contributions the arts make to our society, our communities and our economy.”
Arts and Culture Week was started by the BC Arts Council in 1999, and aims to
raise the profile of B.C. artists and arts organizations, highlight the social, cultural and economic value of the arts to communities across the province, and help connect artists with existing audiences while fostering opportunity in the arts for a new generation of British Columbians.
“As the BC Arts Council looks to the future, we plan to expand the original vision of Arts and Culture Week to support the long-term health of an arts and culture sector that is recognized for its commitment to excellence,” said council chair Jane Danzo. “Artists and arts organizations are a critical part of every community and Arts and Culture Week is an opportunity to highlight their importance in society.”
The council works closely with its delivery partners, the Assembly of BC Arts Councils and ArtStarts in Schools, to deliver the week-long awareness campaign. Celebrations include performances, art walks, exhibitions, workshops, and public art projects supported by over 20,000 artists, young people, educators and community members.
Arts and Culture Week runs April 18 to 24. For more information about events in your community, visit http://www.bcartsweek.org.htm.
