VICTORIA – A Victoria arts advocate and retired school teacher has been appointed to the BC Arts Council board, Council Chair Stan Hamilton announced today. The provincial government also confirmed the re-appointment of four current members.
New member Barbara Adams, a school teacher for 33 years in Victoria, has also served on the board of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and the local Community Arts Council. She has taught art education at the University of Victoria and has received awards for excellence in teaching and service in the community arts. The Province also re-appointed Jackson Davies (Vice-Chair), Merla Beckerman, Gordon Harris, and Lori Marchand as BC Arts Council board members.
The Arts Council Act mandates that the council should consist of not more than 15 members broadly representative of the regions and the artistic communities of British Columbia. Appointments are made by the Lieutenant Governor in Council.
The BC Arts Council – an independent agency of the Province – supports opportunities for artists, strengthens local economies and enhances quality of life for citizens in communities across British Columbia. The provincial government has provided the BC Arts Council with a stable grants budget of $16,831,000 for 2011-12, building upon $152 million in awards to artists and cultural organizations in British Columbia since 2001.
