Wen Wei Dance Tours China

Vancouver-based contemporary dance company Wen Wei Dance is returning to China this December for a four-city tour.

The company, which first toured to China two years ago, will be performing Under the Skin, an international coproduction with the Beijing Modern Dance Company. It’s a full evening of dance for twelve dancers from the two companies, featuring choreographic works by Wen Wei Wang, artistic director of Wen Wei Dance and Gao Yanjinzi, artistic director of the Beijing Modern Dance Company. Canadian co-producers of Under the Skin included the Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre, the Canada Dance Festival, the Banff Centre and BC’s Arts Partners in Creative Development.

The BC Arts Council has provided support for Wen Wei Dance since 2003. The Council assisted the creation phases of Under the Skin in China and in Canada, and supported the Canadian premiere and cross-Canada tour of this acclaimed production. Last year the Council provided $17,000 in operating support, $11,350 for the national tour, and $15,000 to help the company implement long-term fundraising and development strategies.

Wen Wei began dancing at an early age in China, and eventually danced professionally with the Langzhou Song and Dance Company. He moved to Canada in 1991, and joined the Judith Marcuse Dance Company and later, Ballet British Columbia. He has served as artistic director of Wen Wei Dance since 2003. The company has created and toured five works including the critically acclaimed Cock-Pit and Unbound across Canada and around the world. The company has been featured at many prestigious venues including the Canada Dance Festival, Venice Biennale and Esplanade Theatres Singapore.
